Doors are more than just the portals into and outside of a home or rooms; they are also important parts of a home’s décor. Since they are so visible, doors and room dividers should not be the last elements considered when putting a home together but one of the first. These basic categories are helpful to keep in mind when figuring out what kind of doors to put on the front of the home and throughout is well.

Functionality
The first question that needs to be asked when looking at doors is what is the purpose for the door? A door to the exterior will need a good solid door so that it cannot be easily kicked in or even blown off in the event of a hurricane or other severe windstorm. Doors on the indoor rooms of a home do not need to be as solid, but homeowners with children may want to think twice about putting up doors that can be locked on the interior rooms of the house. Basic curtains or panels can also be used inside if securing the room is not much of an issue.

Aesthetics
Doors can do a lot to complement the visual beauty of a home. Interior doors with simple designs etched into the door can do a lot to make the inside of the home more attractive. Portable panels with intricate designs can be used to divide rooms without putting in a whole new door jamb. Glass-paned exterior doors are the favorite in many parts of the country, especially since the glass can allow natural light in to brighten up a room that would otherwise be too dark.

Insulation
Doors are the first line of defense against letting too much hot or cold air inside a house or outside of its structure. Properly-hung doors are a must to keep a room or rooms from becoming too drafty. Exterior doors should also be fitted with good exterior weather-stripping at the bottom to keep the home well insulated.
